Subjective Review – Tendon Makino

Ratings and Comments

Exterior – 3.5/5
The entrance feels like a blend of modern and traditional Japanese design. There are white noren curtains and wood accents, but the glass automatic doors give it a more contemporary feel. Personally, I would prefer a more rustic aesthetic, but that’s just my opinion.

Interior – 4/5
The restaurant has two floors. The ground floor consists entirely of a single countertop wrapping around the kitchen. Sitting here is a great experience because you get to watch the cooking action up close. The upstairs dining area is simple, with several four-top tables. The whole restaurant is a bit cramped, but small decorative touches help maintain the theme. My favorite part is definitely the counter seating downstairs—it’s a great spot to dine.

Menu/Price – 3.5/5
The menu is quite extensive, featuring a variety of seasonal specials, year-round options, and customizable additions. The downside is that prices are on the higher side. While not outrageously expensive, it does cost more than the going rate at other tempura establishments. That said, the quality and portion size justifies the price.

Drinks – 3/5
There aren’t many drink options—just some beer, sake, and either cola or apple juice. However, they do provide complimentary and unlimited hot tea throughout the meal, which is a nice touch!

Food – 5/5
This is the best tempura I’ve had in all of Japan. On this visit, I ordered Tendon “C,” but I’ve also tried “B” and a seasonal option before. Every time, the tempura has been incredibly crunchy, the seafood and vegetables have been high quality, and the flavors have been excellent. After eating a near mountain of tempura, the dashi chazuke is a nice change of pace—especially with the addition of yuzu zest, wasabi, and mitsuba (also known as Japanese parsley).

Staff – 3.5/5
In my experience, the staff has been kind and efficient. Since they’re always busy, there isn’t much opportunity for chit-chat or pleasantries. That said, on my most recent visit, the lady handling the waitlist was exceptionally warm and friendly!

Restroom – 3.5/5
Nothing special—it’s located on the second floor and serves its purpose.

Conclusion – 4.5/5
It’s a bit pricey, but Tendon Makino serves my favorite tempura/tendon bowls in all of Japan. I haven’t tried the fancier or more expensive tempura spots, so there’s likely something better out there, but regardless, I love the food here—and you get a lot of it.
