Name: Marugame Seimen (Shiyakusho-mae)
Ratings and Comments
Exterior – 3/5
Nothing special, but the numerous small advertising signs outside make it easy to find.
Interior – 3/5
Again, nothing particularly notable. It’s a bit cramped, but there’s nothing to really complain about either.
Menu/Price – 4/5
Marugame offers a wide variety of udon and tempura options! In addition to their standard menu, they frequently feature seasonal and rotating specials, so there’s always something new to try. Some limited-time offerings include pork broth soups and rice bowls. On top of that, the prices are very affordable.
Drinks – 3/5
They typically have bottled or canned drinks available, and you can also order certain beverages from the cashier.
Food – 3.5/5
No matter what you order here, it’s going to be very good. Marugame takes great pride in precision and attention to detail. Their noodles are made using a carefully measured flour-to-water ratio, resulting in a perfectly chewy texture. The soup broth is clean and well-balanced, just as you’d expect from traditional udon. Bowls are even preheated in hot water to keep your meal warm as long as possible.
The tempura is crispy, flaky, and consistently well-prepared, kept under heat lamps to maintain quality. While this may not be the absolute best udon or tempura I’ve ever had, it’s still delicious and reliably satisfying.
Staff – 3.5/5
The staff are efficient and quick, though interaction is minimal due to the cafeteria-style service.
Restroom – N/A
I didn’t get the chance to check the restroom on this visit, sorry!
Conclusion – 4/5
I’ve visited at least half a dozen different Marugame locations in both Japan and the U.S., and the experience always delivers. The consistently high level of excellence in noodles, broth, and tempura keeps me coming back time and again.
Marugame holds a special place in my heart. It has nourished me when I was tired, sick, or simply in need of a meal I could count on—no matter which location I walked into.
