Name: Matsuya and MyCurry Shokudo Asakusabashi Minami-ten

Ratings and Comments

Exterior – 3/5
Nothing special here.

Interior – 3/5
The interior is very much like a diner—functional but nothing noteworthy.

Menu/Price – 3.5/5
Since this Matsuya is combined with a MyCurry, the variety of options is significantly expanded. I visited in the morning and found breakfast selections alongside the usual beef bowls (gyumeshi or gyudon) and curry dishes. There were also plenty of customization options for modifying dishes and adding sides. The prices are fantastic—you can walk out of here with a full stomach for around $5.

Drinks – 3/5
Nothing special here, but water and tea are available for free throughout the restaurant.

Food – 4/5
The food on this particular morning completely exceeded my expectations. I came here looking for something quick and cheap, but whoever was in the kitchen put some serious care into my meal. I ordered a pork cutlet curry with an omelet over the rice and adjusted the spice level to a 3 (out of 5). The pork cutlet was cooked to perfection—crispy and crunchy on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside. What really surprised me was that the cutlet was well-seasoned, which is often overlooked in this dish since it’s expected that the meat will be drowned in curry. The omelet was excellent—runny but not overly so—and the curry sauce had a spice level that felt exactly right for a 3 out of 5.

Staff – 3.5/5
There isn’t much need to interact with the staff, which is common in Japan. However, when I went to pick up my food, a polite and kind young man handed me my meal with a friendly attitude—simple but pleasant.

Restroom – Unable to rate
The restroom was closed during my visit. However, I did notice a separate sink area before the toilet room, equipped with a sink, hand soap, and a built-in hand dryer. No paper towels.

Conclusion – 4/5
I had next to zero expectations coming in. Having been to Matsuya and Sukiya before, I figured I’d get a decent meal—nothing more, nothing less. I was wrong. The cook that morning deserves my sincere thanks. If I could guarantee my food would always come out like that, I might never need to eat katsu curry anywhere else again. I know I have spoken highly about CoCo Ichibanya (I prefer CoCo’s curry sauce compared to MyCurry), but the quality of the tonkatsu here was so high and at just $6.50 for a full meal? Get out of town…
